WARM UP YOUR CLASS

We have been using a warm up in our beginner classes for a number of years now. The dancers really seem to like it as it starts each class and they can use that time to get their heads into dancing and out of the office or whatever the day presented. It also prepares the body by 'warming up' the muscles.

This is just an example of ours and each one can be tailored for each teachers needs.

  • We use about 6-8 step combinations in the 1st class to present our warm up. We do the warm up first thing each week. We keep it all on the front wall most of the time.

  • The 2nd week we might add a step combination to the warm up that might be in the new dance we teach for that evening. Adding as the weeks go by. We end up with about 8 consistent combinations and a few 'guest combinations'.

  • Here is a list of the step combinations we use during a 5 to 8 week session for: Bold Green are our cues

         1. Step Touches: left and right (2 cts.)
         2. Step slides: Step R side R, slide L next to R , step R side R, touch L next to R - Repeat to the L (8 cts.)
         3. Vine: w/ touch left and right (8 cts.)
         4. K-Step: step touch forward R diagonal, return touch, back R diagonal touch, return touch (8 cts.)
         5. Walk forward & Back: 3 steps RLR, kick L for 4, walk back for 3 steps LRL, touch R for 4 (8 cts.)
(these can be done on the right and left forward diagonals as well)
         6. Triple & Rock: triple side right, RLR, rock back on to L, return onto R - Repeat same to the left (8 cts.)
         7. Step 1/2 Turn: step forward , hold, 1/2 pivot, hold - repeat (8 cts.)
         8. Triple forward & Back: RLR, rock forward on L, return, triple back LRL, rock back on R, return (8 cts.)

         *  We will add to this list as the dances present new combinations other then the ones above

Example: In Cadillac's & Caviar we took 4 counts of the dance and fit it into the warm up for that week:

Triple forward, 1/4 turn triple forward - then we added a 1/4 turn Jazz Box to return to the front

  • The music we use has an easy beat to hear and is around 102 -108 bpm. Our favorite piece is by Billy Gilman, She's Everything You Want. Pick a few favorites and rotate them.
